I was very moved watching celebrations of the 70th anniversary of VE Day in cities throughout Europe on Friday, May 8. What a day to commemorate! Seventy years ago the Nazis surrendered unconditionally to Allied Forces in Europe.
I had a personal connection to this VE celebration because a dear friend of mine was taking part in the observance in Holland. Her father lost his life there in World War II and this was to be the first time she visited his grave.
What a debt we owe to the generation of our parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents, depending on our age! While writing Growing Up With G.I. Joe’s, I had a chance to immerse myself in the “Greatest Generation,” as Tom Brokaw called them in his award-winning book. I feel am richer for having the opportunity to really look at what they went through, from Great Depression to World War II.
